This neighbourhood is defined by a loop of the Ōpāwaho river. In undertaking these projects we want to recognise that the Ōpāwaho river and surrounds have a long and sustaining significance to Ngāi Tūāhuriri and Ngāi Tahu in Ōtautahi.

Those leading, and working on the project, recognise the importance of these connections and we greatly appreciate the guidance of Sampson Karst (Ngāi Tahu) for lending enthusiasm, time and knowledge to our community project.

This project is being run by the community, and we welcome input from all whanau, and those who have a connection with this place.

Please contact us if you have ideas you would like us to take on board or would like to propose a project.

Community Consultation and Participation

The NZTA and Council have supported the concept of a community-driven process, where the community leads and the Council help us implement the projects. Already, community members have contributed ideas online and via events at Beckenham School, at Beckenham Neighbourhood Association meetings and at the ‘Love the Loop’ bike ride and BBQ in October 2020.

The more the Beckenham community can do the work ourselves (e.g. design, engagement, building) the more money remains for the practical on-ground improvements. This website and a facebook page have been set up help us all communicate and share ideas about upcoming activities.
